Re “The ‘Likability’ Trap” (Sunday Review, May 5):

Thank you so much for Claire Bond Potter’s piece about the “likability” criterion in judging candidates for political office and its adverse impact on women. That Hillary Clinton was judged deficient in the likability category while the male candidate who mocked a disabled man, constantly employed racist rhetoric and had a long history of bragging about sexual predation was not is a pretty good indication of what’s wrong with this standard of fitness for office.

It was heartening to see the largest number of women candidates ever elected to Congress — as well as the most diverse — emerge in 2018. On the other hand, it’s extremely disheartening to learn about the way various women candidates for the presidency are currently being judged and found wanting.

All of us who care about fairness in elections should be willing to call out the media if we see such stories show up this time around.

  To the Editor:

Your article asserts that likability is a standard created by men and therefore a difficult fit for women. In my work, I position brands and people to their greatest likability effect. The desire for likable leaders was not invented by men. It is human nature to prefer likable leaders, and women are as likable as men.

The author states that likability emerged as an important trait after the Civil War, when men began to see character as essential to business advancement. Character has been valued in world leaders for much longer. Cleopatra and Elizabeth I both skillfully managed their image to curry favor and win greater power.

Attributing Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016 to a lack of likability undermines the achievements of women. We should view the current political climate — and unprecedented congressional wins for women — as a meaningful shift in our view of women in power and their likability. These women are accomplished and intelligent people first, and likable in addition.

  To the Editor:

Claire Bond Potter’s analysis is spot on. Women are scrutinized in ways that men never are. The whole “likability” thing is a nonsensical throwback reminiscent of choosing a homecoming king or queen, not the leader of the free world.

Months ago Senator Kamala Harris impressed me as presidential caliber when I saw her question Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing. But she was less than impressive in a recent CNN town hall, during which she seemed overcoached to come off as likable, as she smiled her way through the hour. My faith in Ms. Harris was restored when I saw her effectively grill Attorney General William Barr over his mischaracterization of the Mueller report.

Can we please let the strong, intelligent and immensely talented women who are running for our nation’s highest office run as themselves and not some “Stepford Wife Meets Pleasantville” version of what the first female president should be, for the sake of “likability.”
