Our guide to plays and musicals coming to New York stages and a few last-chance picks of shows that are about to close. Our reviews of open shows are at nytimes.com/reviews/theater.

‘AIN’T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS’ at the Imperial Theater (previews start on Feb. 28; opens on March 21). If you are too proud to beg for a ticket, now would be a good time to buy one for this jukebox musical honoring those R&B smoothies the Temptations. Directed by Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, the team behind “Jersey Boys,” the show has a book by Dominique Morisseau (“Skeleton Crew”).212-239-6200, ainttooproudmusical.com

‘ALICE BY HEART’ at the Newman Mills Theater at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space (in previews; opens on Feb. 26). Curiouser and curiouser. For MCC, Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, creators of the beloved rock ’n’ roll weepy “Spring Awakening,” have teamed with Jessie Nelson of “Waitress” for a riff on “Alice in Wonderland,” set during the London Blitz. Molly Gordon stars as the girl gone down the rabbit hole.646-506-9393, mcctheater.org

‘BOESMAN AND LENA’ at the Pershing Square Signature Center (in previews; opens on Feb. 25). A man and a woman, tramping from shantytown to shantytown, have arrived back in New York. As part of the Athol Fugard residency, the Signature revives his 1969 play, and though it’s set specifically during the apartheid era, it also speaks to a more universal sense of displacement. Yaël Farber directs a cast that includes Zainab Jah and Sahr Ngaujah. 212-244-7529, signaturetheatre.org

‘FLEABAG’ at SoHo Playhouse (previews start on Feb. 27; opens on March 7). A very dark comedy about sexual liberation and emotional cataclysm, this Phoebe Waller-Bridge monologue, which birthed the Amazon series, arrives in New York. (Her other show,”Killing Eve,” did not begin onstage, though it would make a killer musical.) Under Vicky Jones’s direction, Waller-Bridge stars as a nameless woman negotiating identity and grief in contemporary London. fleabagnyc.com

‘HURRICANE DIANE’ at New York Theater Workshop (in previews; opens on Feb. 24). When the god of drunkenness, debauch and theater comes to town, expect a party. Or maybe a tragedy? Madeleine George’s comedy, directed by Leigh Silverman, stars Becca Blackwell as a god disguised as a butch gardener, with Mia Barron, Michelle Beck, Danielle Skraastad and Kate Wetherhead as the housewives she charms.212-460-5475, nytw.org

‘MARYS SEACOLE’ at the Claire Tow Theater (in previews; opens on Feb. 25). Jackie Sibblies Drury, one of the theater’s most thrilling, form-flexing playwrights, returns with a new play set in the 19th century, now and points in between. Quincy Tyler Bernstine stars as a Jamaican woman with a lifetime of adventures and then some. Lileana Blain-Cruz directs. 212-239-6200, lct.org

‘SUICIDE FOREST’ at the Bushwick Starr (previews start on Feb. 27; opens on March 2). Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, on the edge of Mount Fuji, has become a beacon to the desperate. In Kristine Haruna Lee’s play, directed by Aya Ogawa and produced in association with Ma-Yi Theater Company, it haunts the thoughts of a teenage girl and a middle-aged salaryman. thebushwickstarr.org

‘SUPERHERO’ at the Tony Kiser Theater at Second Stage Theater (in previews; opens on Feb. 28). Why borrow a cup of sugar when you can cadge a pinch of something more extraordinary. In this new musical from the “Next to Normal” composer Tom Kitt, with a book by John Logan, a widow and her teenage son befriend a peculiar neighbor. Kyle McArthur, Kate Baldwin and Bryce Pinkham star, with musical staging by Lorin Latarro and direction by Jason Moore. 212-246-4422, 2st.com

‘SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY’ at the Clurman Theater at Theater Row (previews start on Feb. 26; opens on March 13). At a struggling Newark school, a neglected middle schooler and a lunch lady form a lasting bond. Chisa Hutchinson’s play for Keen Company promises more than the usual R.D.A. of uplift and maybe some cartons of milk, too. Jessi D. Hill directs. Jay Mazyck and Brenda Pressley star. 212-239-6200, keencompany.org

‘FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME’ at the Greenwich House Theater (closes on March 3). An evening of hip-hop improv that asks you to lock up your phones and unlock an extremely embarrassing moment, which the cast then riffs on, runs out of rhymes. Directed by Thomas Kail, the show impressed Jesse Green, but “the real secret,” he wrote, “is the cast’s commitment to deep attentiveness.” The performances have sold out, but a standby line will form at the theater before each show, and you can enter a lottery to win tickets at TodayTix.com. freestylelovesupreme.com

‘THE TRIAL OF THE CATONSVILLE NINE’ at Abrons Arts Center (closes on Feb. 23). The Transport Group’s revival of Daniel Berrigan’s 1971 play about a band of antiwar activists closes its case. The three actors, Laura Collins-Hughes wrote, portray “regular people stumbling on a fragment of history that they nimbly re-enact, each playing multiple characters, and sometimes sharing them.” 866-811-4111, transportgroup.org
